You can, of course, play against random non-Friend rivals. That's how it was explained to me in the heat of battle, anyway. And only two people can be linked up for online play at once, so you can't get a four-player game going on four different machines. Unfortunately, you can only put two players on a side (so no four-on-four matches). We played against people at Nintendo's headquarters, so it's not like there was a lot of distance between us (Redmond is a half hour by car from Seattle). Aside from the usual bitching about Friend Codes and lack of voice chat and such, it worked very well. Mario Strikers Charged is also the first major Wii game to offer online competitive play. And of course, you can throw Koopa shells around the arena, making for nonstop havoc. Mario can grow giant, Peach can freeze opponents with her Polaroid camera for some reason, and Daisy can perform the mysterious Crystal Smash (above). Each captain has a special move that you can execute when you pick up power-ups. You can try to score a few goals quickly, or play around with the ball and charge a lengthy shot in hopes of building a commanding lead in mere seconds - if you're good or lucky enough. So there is, as you can see, a robust risk-reward system at play here.
